The road running to the south of the volcano was destroyed so the flood waters did not rise to high and destroy the bridge that the road ran across.
The road was closed to general public
The main road (A1) running to south of the volcano form the capital of Iceland to ViK was closed. This meant that tourist could not travel form the airport to the hotels in Vik. This reduce the income of the hotel owners and the residents who worked in these hotels.
